Lukkas the Grave Guard
The night is quiet. Not even the crickets are singing their evening serenade. It’s as if even they know that this is a place for silence. They know in their small bodies that this place is sacred and should be respected. The Kudu steps careful, on gentle hooves. The fog lays in thin whisps as it blankets over the old tombstones. They look as if they have always existed here, for all of time. The forest has melded into them, the two becoming one. They make as much sense to be here than any of the old tired willows. The Kudu places the basket of offerings down before one of the oldest stones. She’s brought gifts from the last town she visited, cheeses and breads, bones she found along the way, beads from a gentle woman selling her wares along the trail.
The Kudu nods gently.
She can feel his eyes as she looks up across the old burying ground.
And there he is, antlers reaching toward the sky.
He nods in approval.
She nods in return.
And then she goes, silent as she came, the Grave Guard watching as she fades into the trees.
