Aleya the Moth Queen
The sun was setting low beneath the horizon, casting long shadows across the forest floor. The Kudu sat on an old stone, the long grass tickling against her ankles. It wouldn’t be long now…
The darkness grew thicker and the symphony of the night began to hum, a chorus of cicadas taking the center stage in the glorious performance. There was a flutter in the trees, the fast beating of wings against the summer air, just beginning to cool in the presence of evening. The Kudu leaned back, her travel pack left carelessly on the ground beside her. There was no need for her to worry, this was a place where she could completely let her guard down. The sounds of wings grew closer as the sun finally took its final bow behind the trees. And there before the Kudu she stood, a long wispy figure as thin as the young pine trees that grew around them. She did not come alone. Thousands of beautiful moth-like creatures appeared from the trees that surrounded her, clinging to her sides and looking curiously at their new visitor. Aleya smiled with stunningly white teeth and sashayed toward the Kudu. She threw thin arms around her shoulders and embraced her for a long moment.
“We’ve missed you so, my dear traveling friend,” Aleya exclaimed and her voice was so sweet it nearly classified as song.
Aleya the Queen of the Moths, a secret world that only existed in this isolated forest. Nicole was a sole witness to something no other eyes had seen. The Moths danced into the night, circling around a fire that reached hundreds of feet into the air. Their soft wings carried them effortlessly in dance. As Nicole joined them, she found herself quite jealous of their graceful movements. Her hooves were quite a bit more clunky than a gentle pair of wings. But Aleya never seemed to mind. She grasped her old friend’s hooves and swung her around, locked together in laughter and dance. These were the nights they lived for, a celebration of a holiday that nobody in the world but the Kudu knew existed.
