Arcus the Tusked One
The Kudu sat with a full belly and eyes full of stars. Her travels had taken her far this time, to a land deeply nestled within the branches of a jungle so thick the locals told whispers of souls that went in…and never returned again. For a moment she’d feared the same, lost in a labyrinth of tangled foliage, the sun choked out by the thick canopy. The heat had been heavy, sitting like a stone in her gut with each breath she drew in. And then, peering out from the forest’s stomach like some beacon of hope…there it had been. A palace grander than any she’d witnessed before, and she had seen many in her lifetime. Warily, she’d taken the massive gold door knock in hand and let it thud against the solid wood of the structure. Not moments later the door had swung wide and she’d been greeted by a being nearly four times her height, towering over her just as his palace towered over the forest. His many eyes had studied her, trunk curling and twisting, coming instantly to explore her horns and ears. He was silent a long moment, as if looking into her very soul. And then a smile broke across his face.
“Welcome traveler! To the palace of the Trees!” His voice boomed and nearly caused her heart to jump.
He’d paraded her inside, toward a table full of guests she did not know and she felt just the slightest bit guilty for interrupting their feast. But he insisted she take a seat, and so she did. She was offered dishes she’d never set eyes on before, the great beast urging her to try a little of this and a little of that. His guests were as rowdy as he, trumpeting and spilling food, laughing deep belly laughs that filled the high chambers of the ceiling. His name was Arcus, a king possibly, a god maybe and she had never met someone so genuine.
